Breed Traits & Temperament
Yes, but the amount depends on coat type:
- Smooth coat: Minimal shedding year-round, lots of pin hair shedding daily.
- Longhaired: Seasonal shedding, requires regular brushing, usually less shedding than smooth coats.
- Wirehair: Usually require hand stripping. Dream A Dream does not breed wirehairs.
Yes, when properly socialized. They should always be supervised with small children to prevent accidental injury to the dog or child.
Dachshunds are intelligent and independent, which can sometimes be mistaken for stubbornness. Consistent, positive training works best.
They are naturally alert and may bark at new people, animals, or noises. Training and socialization can help manage barking.
Training & Socialization
We begin crate training, doggie door usage, and basic potty training before they leave, but adopters should continue training at home for best results.
Puppies are exposed to a variety of sights, sounds, people, and other dogs from a young age to help them adapt easily to new environments. Puppies are exposed to Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) daily from birth.
With proper introductions, many Dachshunds do well with other dogs and even cats, though some may have a strong prey drive.
Grooming & Maintenance
- Smooth coat: Weekly brushing and occasional baths
- Longhaired: Brushing several times a week to prevent tangles
Yes. Dachshunds are prone to dental issues, so daily brushing or VOHC approved dental chews, along with annual professional cleanings, are recommended. We also recommend beef neck bones (from your grocer’s deli counter) to help chip off tartar between cleanings.
Every 3–4 weeks, or as needed, to prevent overgrowth and discomfort.
Feeding & Nutrition
When people ask what we feed, it’s never a short answer! At Dream A Dream Dachshunds, we believe in variety, quality, and tailoring nutrition to each dog’s individual needs. Every dog is different, and what helps one thrive might not be the same for another.
We start with a high-quality kibble as the foundation — usually Purina Pro Plan or Royal Canin — and then build on that with fresh, wholesome additions. Our dogs also receive NuVet Plus vitamins daily to support immune health, coat quality, and overall wellness.
We mix in a variety of nutrient-rich foods for both nutrition and enrichment, including Texas Tripe raw blends and other fresh ingredients. This diverse, customized approach fills nutritional gaps, keeps mealtime exciting, and supports lifelong health.
In addition to their daily meals, our puppies also enjoy fresh frozen treats as a fun way to keep them cool, entertained, and engaged. These are not only healthy but also mentally stimulating!
For families taking a puppy home, we also recommend using a refillable treat dispenser, which is perfect for frozen goodies and enrichment feeding. You can view our favorite option here.
We recommend free feeding (keeping fresh food available at all times) until your puppy’s deciduous canines come in, which is usually around 6 months of age. After that, you can transition to feeding two meals per day.
Free feeding can also be continued throughout your dog’s lifetime as long as weight does not become an issue. If your dog begins to gain excess weight, switch to measured meals and adjust portions as needed.
We support owners who choose safe, balanced raw diets and can provide guidance on proper preparation.
Ongoing Support
Yes! We’re always available to answer questions and provide guidance for the lifetime of your dog.
